A video installation that addresses the issue of cryptocurrency mining
and explores an alternative payment method based on encryption
algorithms. Cryptocurrency mining operations are often situated in
natural environments near sources of inexpensive hydroelectric or
wind-generated power. The mining process produce sound pollution, as
exemplified in the case of the Niagara Falls region, severely affected by
the mining porcess. Crypto mines generate record-breaking electricity
consumption, which increases the cost of electricity for the community
living in the area. More than one-third of the world’s computing power,
dispersed across various computers, is dedicated to cryptocurrency
mining, which directly contributes to the global energy and climate
crisis.
The original audio of the waterfall featured in the video is replaced by
the ambient noise from the servers rooms.
