Fragments of Vulnerability manifests tenderness as resistance. The work portrays children in various states of fragility fleeing war in Ukraine, experiencing crisis, or simply sleeping in the ordinary stillness of a family home. Importantly, the child is never framed politically. The installation insists on recognizing childhood as a sacred, apolitical space that must be protected.
Each video is accompanied by a maternal voice using ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) techniques, a soft, whisper-like mode of speaking known to ease anxiety and induce calm. Here, the ASMR voice becomes a therapeutic gesture: a tool of emotional repair, aimed at strengthening self-worth in the early stages of a vulnerable mind. It invokes intimacy, care, and safety, an invisible architecture built through sound.
Fragments of Vulnerability explores the voice as a free, universally accessible instrument of healing. It invites viewers to reflect on how we communicate with children especially in times of displacement, trauma, and instability and how tenderness can be a form of resistance. It speaks to parents, caregivers, and social workers, emphasizing the significance of mindful, respectful communication in shaping a child’s emotional resilience.
This work intersects contemporary art, sound practice, and therapeutic research. It creates space for dialogue with students, educators, clinicians, and families opening new ground for discussions on mental health, trauma-informed care, and the building of self-esteem across diverse childhood experiences. A living manifesto, the installation serves as a resource for developing good practices in times of crisis. This work resists the weaponization of childhood by reaffirming the right to emotional
safety even amidst crisis. It proposes tenderness not as sentimentality, but as an act of defiance. Vulnerability as Resistance.
